May is the month of returning to summer life for most Tennesseans, and a return to using your deck after its winter break. This period is often when deck problems start to reveal themselves; any damage from wintertime becomes obvious with more use. May is Deck Safety Month–this is the season of celebrating life outdoors with your friends and family, but also a prime time to keep everyone safe! Safety and reliability are always a deck’s most important features.
Why Safety Matters
Regular deck checks are a necessary part of maintenance. Outdoor spaces are more at risk of damage due to weather and regular wear and tear. Because they are outdoors, there is constant exposure to elements. You must be assessing your deck often and considering how your environment or weather may be affecting it. It’s always good practice to check your deck after a storm.
The North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA) is a community dedicated to “helping prevent injuries and bringing awareness to the importance of regular deck inspections.” Be sure to have your deck built or inspected by professionals who are proud to support these safety initiatives.
Common Safety Threats
Any physical damage to your deck is not just a functionality or aesthetic problem; these issues can be a real safety hazard. Rotten wood always puts loved ones at risk of falling through floorboards or railings. Any wood that is soft to the touch should be examined for rotting. Mold often goes hand in hand with moisture related to rotting–be on the lookout for dark green, grey, or black spots that are often slippery. Loose fasteners or rusting hardware are another common problem.
Helpful Tips
- Schedule at least one annual inspection with a professional (Safety Month is the perfect time)
- Keep your deck clean–remove debris, leaves, and anything that traps moisture
- Regularly check railings, hardware, and floorboards
- Pay attention to the weather, and inspect for problems afterward
