Protect Your Deck from Winter Weather

Winter is tough on all of us, but it can be very harsh on your deck. Below freezing temperatures, snow, and ice can all take a toll on wood surfaces. Harsh weather leads to warping, cracking, and structural damage if not properly cared for. The good news is, a few simple steps can protect your deck and ensure it stays safe, beautiful, and functional throughout the season.

Clear Snow and Ice Strategically and Safely

When snow arrives, remove it from your deck as quickly as possible. This will help prevent moisture buildup and surface damage. If your deck is wooden, use a plastic shovel instead of a metal one to prevent damage. Always shovel in the direction of your wood boards to reduce the risk of wear and tear. Avoid ice-melting products that contain harsh chemicals–pick the deck-safe option.

Inspect and Repair Before Temperatures Drop

Check for loose boards, hardware, or weakened railings before severe weather arrives. It’s a good time to seal small cracks or gaps to prevent water from freezing and expanding these damages. Before freezing temperatures, check that all drainage systems are working properly so no melting snow or ice can pool.

Protect Your Wood Surfaces from Moisture and Cold

If conditions are tolerable, try applying a weather-resistant sealant to protect your wood before winter is at its harshest. Make sure your deck is as water repellent as possible during these wet months to prevent swelling or rotting wood. If you have planters out, keep them elevated or well-ventilated so no water can pool. Wintertime is not for leaving out rugs, so make sure you safely store them.

Limit the Weight Load

Always be mindful of heavy snow or ice buildup that adds excessive weight. Don’t stack firewood, furniture, or decor during winter. Keep your deck clear to limit stress on all your hardware!

Plan for Spring Maintenance

Prep before spring and use this as your planning period. Winter is the optimal time for a reset and review of goals to accomplish by spring. If you start planning now for upgrades, remodels, or re-designing/re-decorating, you will be way ahead.
